PostdocNL reacted to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment regarding the WWZ

On the 25th of February, the POSTDOCNL network reacted to the request of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment for comments on the ‘Wet werk en zekerheid (WWZ)’; the law that limits the number of temporary contracts an employer can give sequentially to an employee.

It is clear that the current law is not compatible with the specificities of scientific jobs and careers of young researchers which largely depend on project-based funding. As a result of these incompatibilities, researchers often face themselves with absurd situations including the premature termination of their grants when work contracts cannot be prolonged despite the availability of funds (secured by the researcher). Such incompatibilities, and many more, have to be addressed in the specific context of the scientific profession.

A “round table” discussion with the commission of Social Affairs and Employment and several experts will take place on the 2nd of March. The outcome of this initiative will be discussed on the 9th of March during a debate where the Minister of Social Affairs and Employment, Lodewijk Asscher, will participate. POSTDOCNL will closely follow the round table discussion.

The POSTDOCNL network will strive to improve the current working conditions of postdoctoral researchers through discussions with governmental, institutional, and social partners.

We thank you for your support and involvement!
